The Launch of Phase 2
New Cottages Coming Soon
Enhancing the La Gratitude Lifestyle Through This Strategic New Development
At La Gratitude, we believe that a true home is an evolving entity—one that grows not just in spirit and community, but in physical space to welcome new members into our fold. It is with immense pride and excitement that we share the latest updates from our grounds. If you have walked through our gardens recently or driven past our facility, you have likely noticed a buzz of activity.
We are officially entering a transformative period. We are delighted to announce that Phase 2 of our expansion strategy is now underway. This New Development represents more than just bricks and mortar; it represents our enduring commitment to providing exceptional care and comfortable living spaces for our seniors in the heart of KwaZulu-Natal.
Below, we detail what this exciting New Development entails, share a glimpse of our beautiful grounds as they stand today, and pay tribute to the silent partners who have made this vision a reality.

The Long Block and The Lapa: A Foundation of Beauty
Before we delve into the details of the construction, it is important to reflect on the serene environment that currently defines La Gratitude. As shown in the recent photographs taken this week, our facility is looking its absolute best under the bright blue skies.
The Long Block
Our existing accommodation, affectionately known as the “Long Block,” remains a cornerstone of our facility. As depicted in the accompanying gallery, these units are characterized by their classic face-brick architecture, which offers a warm, timeless aesthetic that blends seamlessly with the natural surroundings. We have always prioritized accessibility and ease of movement for our residents. The gentle ramps, sturdy railings, and wide paved pathways visible in the photos ensure that all residents, regardless of mobility levels, can enjoy the freedom of the outdoors safely.
The Lapa and Gardens
The heart of our social life is arguably the Lapa area. The photos reveal this space in its full glory—a shaded, inviting structure with a classic green roof that offers respite from the sun. It is here that community bonds are forged, tea is shared, and residents enjoy the fresh air.
Surrounding the buildings is the pride of our maintenance team: the gardens. We are currently blessed with “prachtige teine” (beautiful gardens) that are bursting with life.
- The Succulent Beds: Our gardening team has curated stunning succulent displays, featuring vibrant red foliage and hardy green textures that add structure and color to the landscape year-round.
- The Established Trees: As seen in the wider shots of the grounds, our property is anchored by massive, mature trees. These giants provide expansive canopies of shade, creating park-like lawns where the only sounds are the rustling of leaves and the call of the Hadeda Ibis foraging in the grass.
- Floral Accents: From the delicate blooms near the walkways to the potted plants lining the garage areas, every corner of La Gratitude is designed to offer a visual treat.
This dedication to a manicured, peaceful environment sets the standard for everything we do. It is within this landscape of tranquility that we are now carefully integrating our New Development.
Phase 2: The New Development Explained
The most significant news we have to share is the official commencement of Phase 2. This project has been in the planning stages for some time, and seeing the earthmoving equipment and construction teams on-site is a thrilling milestone for management, staff, and residents alike.
What is being built?
The primary focus of this New Development is the construction of three additional cottages (korthuise). These new units are being built adjacent to the Lapa area, a strategic location chosen to ensure that new residents feel immediately connected to the social hub of the estate.
The design of these cottages will mirror the high standards of our existing structures. We are employing the same durable materials and architectural style to ensure visual continuity. The goal is for the new buildings to look as though they have always belonged there, complementing the “Long Block” rather than competing with it.
Progress and Safety
As evident in the construction photos, the site has been securely demarcated with high-visibility yellow and red safety netting. This ensures that while we progress with the New Development, the safety and security of our current residents remain uncompromised. We understand that construction brings a degree of disruption, but we are taking every measure to keep noise levels manageable and the site tidy.
We are currently in the deep excavation and foundation phase. The heavy machinery is hard at work preparing the ground, a necessary step to ensure these new homes stand the test of time.
The Timeline
We know that prospective residents and their families are eager to know when these units will be available. We are pleased to report that the project is currently running on schedule. Barring any unforeseen weather delays or supply chain issues, we are targeting a completion date by the end of June.
By mid-year, we expect to be cutting the ribbon on these three new cottages, ready to welcome new faces into the La Gratitude family.
A Tribute to Our Donors
A New Development of this magnitude is a capital-intensive endeavor. In the non-profit and care sectors, growth is often limited by available resources. However, La Gratitude has been blessed with a miraculous intervention.
We wish to dedicate a significant portion of this announcement to our fantastic donors. Phase 2 is happening directly because of their generosity.
The Power of Anonymous Giving
In an era where charity is often accompanied by requests for publicity or naming rights, our donors have taken a different, deeply humble path. They have explicitly requested to remain anonymous. They do not seek public acclaim, plaques, or fanfare. Their sole desire was to see La Gratitude expand its capacity to care for the elderly.
To our donors: While we cannot name you here, please know that every brick laid, every foundation poured, and every future resident who finds comfort in these new cottages is a testament to your kindness. You have given us the tools to secure our future, and for that, we are eternally grateful. Your contribution is not just a donation; it is a legacy.
The Vision for the Future
Why is this New Development so important?
The demand for quality, secure, and compassionate retirement accommodation in our region is growing. As our population ages, the need for facilities that offer more than just a bed—facilities that offer a community, medical support, and a beautiful lifestyle—increases.
By adding these three cottages, we are doing our part to alleviate the shortage of accommodation. We are ensuring that more individuals can enjoy their golden years in a setting that prioritizes dignity and joy. This expansion proves that La Gratitude is not stagnant; we are a forward-thinking institution adapting to the needs of our community.
