In our previous studies on the value of community and fellowship in our spiritual growth and discovering love and compassion as a journey of faith and growth, we learned about the importance of supporting one another as we grow in our faith. In this study, we will explore how our financial decisions can also have an impact on our spiritual journey.

Finances and Resources

A Study on Biblical Principles and Practical Applications

Implications for Our Finances and Resources

Proverbs 3:9-10: This passage encourages us to honour God with everything we have, recognizing that He is the source of our blessings and the one who provides for our needs.

We should honour God with our possessions.

Our possessions include everything we own, from our homes and cars to our clothes and personal belongings. When we honour God with our possessions, we recognize that everything we have belongs to Him and that we are stewards of His blessings. This means using our possessions wisely, being grateful for what we have, and giving generously to those in need.

We should give God the first fruits of our increase.

The “first fruits” were the first and best of the harvest, and they were offered to God as a symbol of gratitude and obedience. In the same way, we should give God the first and best of our income, recognizing that everything we have comes from Him. This means giving generously to support the work of the church and to help those in need.

The Principle of Tithing

Tithing Demonstrates Our Obedience to God.

  • The command to tithe is a clear instruction from God and obedience to Him is an act of faith (Hebrews 11:6).
  • By tithing, we acknowledge that God is the source of our wealth and resources (Deuteronomy 8:18) and that He is worthy of our first fruits (Proverbs 3:9-10).

Tithing Enables the Church to Carry Out Its Mission.

  • The storehouse mentioned in Malachi 3:10 is commonly understood to refer to the local church.
  • By tithing, we support the work of the church, including evangelism, discipleship, and benevolence.
  • Tithing is an act of partnership with the church in fulfilling the Great Commission (Matthew 28:18-20).

Tithing Brings Blessings and Protection.

  • God promises to open the windows of heaven and pour out blessings on those who bring the tithe (Malachi 3:10).
  • Tithing is an act of faith and trust in God’s provision, and it invites His protection over our finances and resources (Proverbs 3:9-10).
  • By tithing, we position ourselves to receive God’s favour and blessings (Luke 6:38).

The principle of tithing is a fundamental aspect of our Christian walk. It is an act of obedience, partnership, and faith that enables us to participate in the work of the church and receive God’s blessings and protection over our finances and resources.

Giving to the Poor Reflects God’s Character

God is described as a God of mercy and compassion (Psalm 86:15) and He commands us to show the same love and kindness to others, especially to the poor and needy (Deuteronomy 15:11).

By giving to the poor, we reflect God’s character and demonstrate our love for Him (Matthew 25:40).

Giving to the Poor Brings Blessings

  • Proverbs 22:9 states that those who give to the poor will be blessed.
  • Giving to the poor is an act of faith and trust in God’s provision (2 Corinthians 9:8-9) and it positions us to receive His blessings (Luke 6:38).
  • Giving to the Poor Is an Investment in God’s Kingdom
  • Giving to the poor is an act of stewardship and generosity (2 Corinthians 9:11) that honours God and advances His Kingdom.
  • By giving to the poor, we contribute to the alleviation of suffering and the spread of the Gospel (Matthew 25:35-40).

The importance of giving to the poor cannot be overstated. It reflects God’s character, brings blessings, and advances His Kingdom. As we give to the poor, we demonstrate our love for God and our commitment to His mission. Let us have a generous eye and give some of our bread to the poor, knowing that in doing so, we honour God and bless others.

Giving Should Be a Personal Decision

Each person should give according to what they have decided in their heart, not because they feel obligated or pressured to do so. Giving should be a personal decision made in response to God’s leading and the needs of others.

Giving Should Be Done Cheerfully

  • God loves a cheerful giver, someone who gives with joy and gratitude in their heart (Proverbs 11:25).
  • Giving cheerfully reflects a heart that is aligned with God’s purposes and is a demonstration of our faith and trust in Him (2 Corinthians 8:2).

Giving Should Be Generous

  • 2 Corinthians 9:6 states that the one who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and the one who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully.
  • Giving generously is an act of faith that positions us to receive God’s abundant blessings (Luke 6:38).

The principle of cheerful giving emphasizes the importance of giving from the heart, with joy and generosity. As we give, we should remember that giving is a personal decision that should reflect our love for God and our commitment to His purposes. Let us give cheerfully and generously, knowing that in doing so, we honour God and bless others.

Earthly Treasures Are Temporary

Earthly possessions, no matter how valuable or significant they may seem, are temporary and will ultimately pass away (Matthew 6:19-21). Our focus should not be on acquiring material possessions, but on storing up treasures in heaven that is eternal.

Heavenly Treasures Are Permanent

The treasures we store up in heaven are permanent and will last forever (1 Peter 1:3-4). Investing in eternal treasures should be our priority, as it is a wise and profitable use of our resources.

Our Heart Follows Our Treasures

Our priorities and desires are often revealed by the things we invest our time, energy, and resources in (Matthew 6:21). By storing up treasures in heaven, we align our hearts with God’s purposes and priorities, and we demonstrate our love for Him and His kingdom.

Luke 12:33-34 reminds us of the importance of storing up treasures in heaven and investing in eternal things. As we seek to honour God with our finances and resources, let us remember that earthly treasures are temporary, but heavenly treasures are permanent.

Finances and Resources

Everything Belongs to God

Psalm 24:1 says, “The earth is the Lord’s, and all its fullness, the world and those who dwell therein.” As stewards, we recognize that everything we have belongs to God, and we are called to manage it wisely and use it for His glory.

Our Role as Stewards

As stewards, we have been entrusted with the responsibility to manage God’s resources faithfully (1 Corinthians 4:2). We are called to be good stewards of our time, talents, and treasures, using them for God’s purposes and according to His will.

Managing Our Resources Wisely:

Budgeting and Financial Planning

Proverbs 21:5 says, “The plans of the diligent lead surely to plenty, but those of everyone who is hasty, surely to poverty.” Managing our finances and resources wisely requires us to plan and budget carefully, making sure that we are using our resources in the most effective and efficient way.

Avoiding Debt

Proverbs 22:7 says, “The rich rules over the poor, and the borrower is servant to the lender.” One of the keys to managing our resources wisely is to avoid debt and live within our means. This allows us to be free to use our resources for God’s purposes rather than being burdened by financial obligations.

Giving Sacrificially:

The Principle of Sacrifice

Mark 12:41-44 tells the story of the poor widow who gave two small coins to the temple treasury, saying that she had given more than all the others because she had given everything she had.

Giving sacrificially means giving beyond what is comfortable or convenient, trusting that God will provide for our needs as we seek to honour Him with our resources.

The Heart of Giving

2 Corinthians 9:7 says, “So let each one give as he purposes in his heart, not grudgingly or of necessity; for God loves a cheerful giver.” Giving sacrificially requires a heart that is focused on blessing others and seeking to honour God rather than seeking personal gain or recognition.

As Christians, we are called to honour God with our finances and resources by recognizing our role as stewards and managing them wisely, avoiding debt, and giving sacrificially with a heart that seeks to bless others. May we be faithful stewards of all that God has entrusted to us, using our resources for His glory and investing in eternal treasures.

Finances and Resources

Practical Applications.

As Christians, it is our duty to honour God in all areas of our lives, including our finances and resources. Here are some practical ways to do just that:

Budgeting: Creating a budget can be a great way to honour God with our finances. By setting priorities and living within our means, we can avoid overspending and wasting our resources. It also allows us to allocate funds for important things such as tithing and charitable giving.

Giving to Charity: Giving to charity is an excellent way to honour God with our resources. By donating to reputable organizations that help those in need, we can be the hands and feet of Jesus and make a real difference in people’s lives. When giving to charity, it is essential to research the organization to ensure they align with biblical values and that donations are used effectively.

Supporting the Work of the Church: The church is a vital part of the Christian community, and supporting its work is an excellent way to honour God with our resources. This can include tithing, volunteering, or contributing to specific ministries or projects within the church. By supporting the work of the church, we can help spread the gospel, support our brothers and sisters in Christ, and make a positive impact on our communities.

Avoiding Materialism: In a world that often values material possessions over spiritual matters, it can be challenging to avoid materialism. However, as Christians, we are called to seek first the kingdom of God and trust that He will provide for our needs. By focusing on our relationship with God and prioritizing spiritual growth over material possessions, we can honour God with our resources and avoid the dangers of materialism.

There are many practical ways to honour God with our finances and resources. By budgeting wisely, giving to charity, supporting the work of the church, and avoiding materialism, we can be good stewards of what God has blessed us with and make a positive impact on the world around us.

A Prayer for Financial Stewardship and Generosity

Dear God,

Thank you for this time we’ve had to study your Word and learn more about honouring you with our finances and resources. We recognize that everything we have comes from you and we want to be faithful stewards of the blessings you’ve given us.

As we seek to implement the principles we’ve learned, we pray for wisdom and guidance in managing our finances and resources in a way that honours you. Help us to be generous and sacrificial in our giving, with a heart that seeks to bless others and advance your kingdom.

We pray for those in need, both in our communities and around the world. May we be inspired to give generously to those who are less fortunate, and may our gifts bring hope and tangible help to those who are struggling.

We also pray for the work of the church and ministries that seek to share your love with the world. May we be faithful in supporting these efforts and using our resources to advance your kingdom and bring glory to your name.

Thank you for the opportunity to study your Word and grow in our faith. May we continue to seek you in all we do, and may our lives be a reflection of your love and grace.

We ask all these things in Jesus’ name, Amen.
