Within our Frail Care Facility, we provide specialized services that include Primary Care, Palliative Care, Respite Care and Rehabilitative Care for Dementia and Alzheimer’s. Yet, this was only the prologue to our grand narrative. Steered by discernment and guided by meticulous feasibility studies, the year 1987 etched the beginning of an epochal chapter as La Gratitude’s first Old Age Home, sanctified by legality and built upon a foundation of purpose, took its place on the canvas of Newcastle Central. A confluence of excitement and determination propelled the construction forward, resulting in the majestic edifice of La Gratitude Old Age Home. Its strategic location, diagonally poised opposite the Private Hospital, has proven not just convenient, but a testament to our commitment to accessibility and care.

Within the embrace of Pioneer Park’s residential expanse, the Flats stand as a tranquil haven, a testament to our dedication to comfortable living. Drawing nearer to the heart of Central Newcastle, the Frail Care Facility and the Cottages stand as beacons of comprehensive care. These two pillars of solace share a symbiotic presence, strategically situated on the same premises. This proximity ensures a seamless conduit to immediate assistance during times of exigency, epitomizing the essence of our dedication to well-being.

The ethos of La Gratitude can be encapsulated in its relentless pursuit of facilitating a life where each individual, in the tapestry of their ageing years, finds themselves enveloped in the cocoon of comfort, compassion, and the unwavering assurance that their well-being is paramount.

In response to an escalating imperative recognized by the Government in 2004 to fortify and elevate the quality of care bestowed upon the elderly, La Gratitude experienced a transformative metamorphosis. The erstwhile designation of an Old Age Home underwent a significant transmutation under the aegis of the Department of Social Development, transmigrating into a duly registered and accredited Frail Care Facility.

A pivotal juncture was reached in 2013, a year when the resonance of our mission and the resonance of goodwill merged harmoniously. The resounding demand for accessible and cost-effective retirement abodes, coupled with our steadfast commitment to impeccable service, beckoned the attention of magnanimous benefactors. These philanthropic souls, moved by a shared vision of compassionate support, opened their hearts and their wallets. Their benevolence charted a transformative trajectory, breathing life into an expansion endeavour of remarkable magnitude. It was during this transformative phase that a constellation of twelve (12) sumptuous Cottages was birthed, a symphony of comfort and care, each a testament to the profound impact that communal empathy can wield.

The prologue of expansion in 2013 was only a prelude to the unfolding saga of growth. In the year 2015, the ever-resonating chorus of benevolence once more rang out. United by a common creed of enriching lives and ensuring dignified ageing, generous souls once again galvanized into action. With unwavering commitment and the spirit of giving as their guiding North Star, they orchestrated the addition of another four (4) resplendent Cottages to our haven of tranquillity.

The trajectory of La Gratitude’s evolution serves as a poignant reminder that every milestone achieved is an orchestration of shared humanity, where hearts and hands join to compose a narrative of compassion and empowerment. Specialized Medical Care

Medical Care Variations

Our approach to resident care is one of encouragement to continue growth and blossom as people. Therefore we have diversified our medical care to better provide for each individual person. Ranging from minimal assistance to complete frail care.

Independent Living

Independent living care provides residents with total independence and minimal medical care. This is best suited for people that have the ability to live independently but seek minimal medical assistance with chronic disease or disabilities. This type of care is offered to residents in the flats and cottages at La Gratitude.

Assisted Living

Assisted living care is a departure from independent living, but still not at the level of long-term or home care. Therefore, assisted living allows you to continue your independent lifestyle in the flats and cottages. What makes assisted living different from totally independent living is the additional care that is given. In most cases, this service is for the slightly more aged members of the community.

Furthermore, we are dedicated to promoting and maintaining the highest standard of residential care for frail older persons through understanding the ageing process, and age-related brain diseases.

Social Responsibility

At La Gratitude, our social responsibility comes from a diversity of backgrounds. We are an organisation committed to being socially responsible within the community. We serve to this end, we are actively involved in numerous outreach and awareness programmes in both rural and urban areas throughout the Amajuba / Newcastle District. 

The aim of the organisation is to provide vital services for the needy, vulnerable and frail older persons within the community and surrounding areas and to further ensure the best interest of our frail and older persons, challenged within the frail care, seniority years are met.

The Team

The La Gratitude team includes more than 110 employees who are loyal, dedicated, committed, and experienced. This team manage the numerous services provided such as housekeeping (laundry and cleaning), food and beverage, maintenance, administration, medical, fundraising, activities, social services and community outreach initiatives throughout our organisation.
